Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Chicago?

Tree Trimming & Pruning

What is the difference between trimming and pruning?

Trimming focuses on shape, size and clearance, while pruning focuses on tree health, structure and removing problem wood. Most jobs include both. Learn more about our tree trimming and tree pruning services.

What is the best time to trim trees in Chicago?

Late winter to early spring is best for most trees, while they are dormant. Spring-flowering trees should be trimmed right after they bloom. Read our full best time to trim trees in Chicago guide.

How often should trees be trimmed?

Most trees benefit from trimming every two to three years, while fast-growing species may need annual attention.

Will trimming harm my tree?

No. Correct trimming improves health and structure. We use proper cuts and never remove more than a tree can handle in one season.

Stump Removal

What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding chips the stump below grade and leaves the roots in place. Full removal extracts the entire root ball, which costs two to three times more but leaves a clean excavation.

How much does stump removal cost in Chicago?

Grinding typically costs $150 to $650 depending on diameter, while full stump and root extraction can reach $1,100 or more. Use our stump removal cost calculator for a range.

Can I plant over a ground stump?

Yes. Once the grindings are cleared and soil is added, most areas are ready to replant or sod.

Emergency & Storm Service

Do you offer 24/7 emergency tree removal?

Yes. We provide 24/7 emergency tree service across Chicago for storm damage, fallen trees and dangerous limbs. Call (312) 815-3897 any time.

What should I do if a tree falls on my house?

Get everyone to safety, stay clear of the tree and any downed wires, and call for help. Do not try to cut or move the tree yourself. See our emergency tree service page.

Does insurance cover emergency tree removal?

Many policies cover removal when a tree damages a covered structure. Coverage for a tree that falls in the open yard is often limited. We provide documentation to support your claim.

What if a tree is touching a power line?

Never touch a tree that is in contact with a power line. Call 911 and the utility first, then call us so we can coordinate safe removal.
